NTUC Fairprice Stop Housing Allowance for 1,000 M’sian Workers Stucked Here.
When Malaysia announced its Movement Control Order (MCO) a lot of Malaysians who commuted daily to Singapore has a difficult choice to make, which is to either live in Singapore for the next weeks or lost their jobs.
Fortunately, the Singapore government decided to offer support with Temporary Housing Support (THS) scheme which grants the employer $50 per affected worker per night. But as Malaysia is extending their lockdown further, PM Lee announced that for some reason, this financially supporting for these workers may no longer be possible.
While NTUC Fairprice will be ceasing its accommodation support for about 1,000 workers from Malaysia because it is not financially sustainable. As current Malaysia and Singapore cross-border resume plan will still take some times. Fairprice also said in a letter to employees due to this bad situation, for those workers who choose to return to Malaysia to discuss reaction with her family have to sign an acknowledgement of understanding that once they leave Singapore, there will have a risk of being denied entry back to the country. Which are making Malaysian workers in Fairprice now to have a difficult decision to make.
