PM Lee Addresses To Nation On General Election
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has just announced updates news on the current General Election on the live broadcast towards all nations at 4 pm Tuesday 23 June.
With the current situation of the pandemic which is still lingering around, PM Lee said that it will be a critical decision to make which will impact every single Singaporean lives and livelihoods, shapes of Singapore in the future, and incoming 5 years terms of the next government.
During the election period, the Government will be continuing to operates even after the Parliament is dissolved and the public service will function normally. This is crucial for the ongoing operations against Covid-19 while sustaining the economy and protecting jobs. Furthermore, PM Lee also mentioned that there are a lot of other countries that have held an election during the COvid-19 outbreak.
For the moment, The Elections Department has made the arrangement and new guidelines on effective campaigning, candidates are allowed to go house-to-house campaigning and provided they follow the safe distancing precautions, while physical election rallies will not be possible. While on Polling Day, the Election Departments will be implementing additional precautions measurement to ensure everyone’s safety is top priorities.
PM Lee also says holding an election now – when things are relatively stable – will clear the decks, and give the new Government a fresh, full five-year mandate. The alternative, he says, is to wait out the Covid-19 pandemic but there is no assurance that the pandemic will be over before this Government’s term must end next April. “This is why I have decided to hold the General Election now,” he says.
