Five China University Students Gets 2.5 Year Jail After Taking Advantage on KFC App Loophole on Free Meal $12k for 5 months

Five university students in China have been jailed after caught exploiting a glitch in KFC’s online ordering system where the group was charged with fraud and jailed for taking advantage of a scam that cost KFC more than 200,000 yuan in total ($41,442) loss. The mastermind of the scam is a 23 year old student at a university in Jiangsu by the surname Xu who manage to discover the loophole.
He realizes that he could get free food by using a coupon on the KFC app and then get a refund using the same coupon on the chain’s WeChat account. Later he even decided to take his scam further by selling the meals and coupons to others to make a profit too.
Xu also brought four other students into his scam and taught them how to receive the free KFC meals and over the period of six months, he has caused a loss of 58,000 yuan (nearly $12,000) to the Shanghai-based Yum China Holdings Inc, the operator of KFC restaurants in China while his four mates caused economic losses of up to 47,000 yuan ($9,460AUD).
The Xuhui District People’s Court in Shanghai ruled that Xu will be sentenced to two and a half years for the crimes of fraud and imparting criminal methods and the student was also fined 6,000 yuan ($1,200AUD). While the four students were given prison sentences that ranged from 15 months to two years and were fined in smaller amounts.
