Famous Ice-Cream Man In Yew Tee Who Rides In A Bumbleebee Ice-Cream Cart Retires Happily after 21 Years in Business

Those who are living in the Yew Tee and Chua Chu Kang areas might stumble upon a yellow bumblebee alike ice-cream cart uncle who has been selling ice cream for the past two decades. The ice-cream uncle, Song Yong Kiong who is better known as Uncle Song to those who have been purchasing his frozen treats. Song’s ice-cream cart is different compare to another ice-cream vendor where his vehicle is unique and his carts are typically attached to the motorcycle which Song is a paraplegic means he is paralyzed from the waist down.
His stories on why he is in this condition happen back in 1993 where he had an unfortunate accident back in 1993 when he was working as a mechanic, where one day he was lying beneath a car to fix it when the supports holding the car gave up and over 1,000kg of steel landed on his lower half body. He was rushed to the hospitals and surrounded by numerous doctors and the surgery doctor manages to save his life but his lower body sustained a heavy injury which caused him to no longer be able to walk.

At first, Song was feeling devastated after he was discharged from hospital after three months and he wasn’t able to walk where he traveled back to Malaysia, his home country to search for an alternative cure but his hunt was futile. Then he met a friend who brought him to his church in Singapore and Song would merely tag along for church services and cell group. Then later the church members helped to raise enough money to get Song a vehicle so he could travel to the church himself and later he realized that it could mean a chance to earn income as well.

Song needs to rise early to prepare for the dry ice, wafers, and other ingredients and sometimes he will be injured himself suffering a deep cut to the bone while slicing through the huge slabs of ice cream as well as burn from the dry ice. And he would be cutting and serving up to 800 chunks of ice cream per day. Song, who has he staying strong with his determination and now Song’s three daughters are adults, where he decided it is time for him to retire.
