New Shy Baby Pygmy Hippo Named Miata Is the Newest Addition to Singapore’s Zoo Family

The Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) has revealed the latest addition to Singapore Zoo on April 20 where this small greyish black bundle and goes by the name of Miata. This is the first baby pygmy hippo born after four years and Miata’s name is of African origin and translates to firstborn. She is the first calf of 10 years old male named Divo and an 11-year-old female named Psota which went through a natural birthing process.
WRS said that Miata was supposed to be a twin but the survival rates of twin calves are extremely low and Miata lost her other twin. Miata is the 25th successful pygmy hippo birth in the Singapore Zoo and her father Divo was amongst this bloat of pygmy hippopotami. Miata which is a little shy can be found hanging around her mother Psota during mealtime and when she is not napping, she loves splashing the water.
Endemic to the Upper Guinea Forest of West Africa, pygmy hippos are native to West Africa and can only be found there. And estimated that around 2,000 wild pygmy hippos remain in the Upper Guinean Forest and are classified ad endangered under the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, pygmy hippos are at a very high risk of extinction in the wild.
