The supermarket operator Sheng Siong has reported a net profit of $30.9 million for its first quarter on April 26 which is a rise of 6.5 percent from the $29 million recorded in the previous year. The group’s revenue for the quarter also rose by 2.7 percent year on year from $328.7 million in the first quarter of the financial year 2020 to $337.6 million in the same period of the financial year 2021.
Sheng Song also noted that the slight increase in revenue for the quarter was the revenue growth in new stores that opened last year which a total of five new stores were opened in 2020 and the same-store sale was flat because of the high base in the first quarter of the financial year 2020. Sheng Shiong attributed this mainly to lower input price while sales mix of fresh to non-fresh produce remained largely the same in the first quarter of the financial year 2021.
The group received $1.86 million in government grants in the first quarter of the financial year 2021, compared with $1.59 million in the corresponding period last year. The grants were from various government agencies under the Wage Credit, Special Employment Credit schemes, and Covid-19-related grants; the increase came mainly from the Wage Credit Scheme.
