A plan which to stop public sweeping of open areas and on-ground levels of housing estates in Singapore one day a month has started. Where the campaign will be ramped up to becomes a monthly affair. Currently, all 17 town councils have taken part in the initiative where the surrounding was not swept from 6 am to midnight as part of the annual Keep Clean, Singapore! Campaign.
The Public Hygiene Council (PHC) which is the agency behind the idea said that the campaign kicked off with the “SG Clean Day” initiative to show how much litter there is and what it will be if there is no one to clean after this rubbish and the talks with the town councils to step up the SG Clean Days to once every quarter in 2021 and now it will be once a month by 2022.
This step is to encourage the volunteer to pick up litter around their neighbourhoods in small groups of eight and activating volunteers will be focusing on an upcoming May 29 event ahead of World Environment Day. The PHC also planned the BlockWalk where an event as volunteers will be spread out across Singapore to pick up litter in neighbourhoods and community spaces such as void decks, playground and park. This aim is to rally 300 to 1,000 volunteers with their stakeholders and partners and partnership with Habitat for Humanity Singapore.
