If you ever go to purchase bananas in the local market, they will usually come in different sizes or perhaps green color or yellow colors. However, you might not meet the Blue Java bananas before where their striking blueish appearance will make you think that they might be a fake fruit.
Before they ripen, Blue Java bananas have an unusual silvery blue or blue-green peel due to their natural wax coating. However, this blue tinge fades slowly as they mature, and becomes a pale yellow. Then their flesh turns into creamy white color and these blue java bananas are a rare hybrid of Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana and known to survive in cold climates as low as -7°C. They are mainly cultivated in Hawaii and some parts of Southeast Asia and Central America since the 1920s. This banana species goes by the name ‘Hawaiian banana’ in Fiji, ‘Krie’ in the Philippines, and ‘Cenizo’ in certain parts of Central America. The Blue Java bananas have natural compounds in their soft and creamy flash giving them a distinct flavor that has a hint of vanilla.
