A New Giant Christ Statue Taller Than Rio’s is Being built in Brazil

A giant new statue of Christ is being built in southern Brazil which is even higher than the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue which overlooks Rio de Janeiro. The head and outstretched arms were added recently to the statue which has been under construction since 2019 in the city of Encantado in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The monument is scheduled to complete by end of this year according to the Association of the Friends of Christ.
The statue will be named Christ the Protector which stands 43 meters tall including its pedestal which is one of the world’s tallest statues of Christ with outstretched arms. It will measure 36 meters from hand to hand and also the interior elevator and observation deck near the top. Compare to Christ the Redeemer, it is measuring 38 meters high, pedestal included, and 28 meters wide and it will mark its 90th birthday this October.
Encantado is a city of 22,000 lies 145 kilometers northwest of the state capital of Porto Alegre and this project is intended to inspire faith and encourage tourism to the area. The father-son team of sculptors, Genesio and Markus Moura are overseeing the work which the project’s budget of 2 million reals ($490,000) is being entirely financed through donation.
