Old Timer Coffee Shops of Duo Father and Son are Still Going Strong With Traditional Kaya Toast and Coffee
Heap Seng Leong in the North Bridge Road is run by Shi Pong Shu, 80 years old and his son Shi Ting Chow who is in his 50s. Earlier when the Covid-19 struck in 2020, the coffee shop seen struggling to do business while long time regular and fans rallied one another and brought takeaway meal that time to support for this famous traditional old timer coffee shop.
These days, the shop is shining back again thanks to the support from all the customers, The elder, who is Hock Chew still showing up at his work daily with his signature singlet and green or blue striped pyjama pants and he makes the beverages and toast and butters most of the time. He come to Singapore from China in the 1930s at age 12 and the last 47 years and counting, this father and son has been selling the trinity Nanyang kopitiam which are the Traditional Nanyang coffee and tea, kaya and butter toasts, as well as soft-boiled eggs.
The Shis have been running this shop since 1974 and it looks like it has been stuck in a time wrap and the shop has been a favorites place for photographers and videographers over the years. The duo bought the kopitiam premises from the previous Hainanese owner, who was surnamed Heap (協) — which explains the signboard. The tables, including a host of other accoutrements in the shop, appear to have been there for decades now.
