7.2 Quake Hits The Coast of North Island, New Zealand with Tsunami Alert Raised
A magnitude of 7.2 quake shook the North Island of New Zealand earlier on 5 March 2021 around 1.27 am on New Zealand local time. The earthquake which happens at 189 km northeast of the city of Gisborne, New Zealand at offshore 82 km deep. Within minutes after the quake, there are numerous reports of users describing moderate shaking and the quake was felt up to 800 km radius from the epicentre, capable of reaching the City of Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand.
Tsunami warnings were raised by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) also and these tsunamis could possibly reach coastal areas of up to 300 km from the epicentre.
