How to Grow Your Own Kangkung, Curry Leaves and Other Balcony Plants Yourself
With the new trends of having your own fresh herb ingredient right at your home where now you can now take this chance to enjoy planting all the canister, bottles and such other way to enjoy your project right at your balcony. Here are some of the beginner friendlyplants you can start off with.
Bok Choy
Bok Choy is easy to grow as you just need to take some left over bok choy from your cooking and leave it in a shallow bowl filled with a bit of water and then keep it on with some sunlight and change the water every few days. Within a week later, you can start to see your bok choy sprouting around the center of the base and later you can transfer to growing bok choy into soil.
Cilantro
Cilantro is a great way to add a fresh flavor to your dishes where you can find these vegetables easily everywhere, and you can just use the root part of this Cilantro on some of your leftover cooking and just make sure that there are about three inches of the stem intact. Then place it in a jar of water and give it enough sunlight with regular water every day.
Kangkung
You can simply start to regrow your kangkung using a pail and start by soaking kangkung seeds for 32 hours, then drain it and place it in a fine colander. Fill up the pail with water and place the colander over the top. Cover the seed and after 2-3 days, you will see them start to sprout. Treat them to ample sunlight at this point and add fertilizer.
Romaine Lettuce
You can now enjoy an endless supply of salad green at home where you can just save the bottom part of your romaine lettuce and keep it in a bowl with half an inch of water and keep it on sunny windowsill and change the water everyday. Once you start to see sprout begin after within a week then you can just transfer it to soil filled container or pot.
Ginger
You can plant your own ginger by choosing a young, smooth and healthy root to work where you can just plant it in a pot with a mix of potting soil and compost and make sure the pot has plenty of drainage and place it somewhere warm and with direct sunlight.
Cili Padi
If you wanted to plant Cili Padi then you can just find those left over cili padi seeds then you can start planting it by the seeds and sprinkle them into the soil filled container or a pot and water them two times a day.
Scallions or Green Onions
Don’t throw away the bottom part of your scallions where they are one of the easiest plant to grow where you can just place them in water filled jar on a sunny windowsill and change the water every other day. Within a week, a will have new scallions and harvest them as needed and ensure the roots are keep in water or replant them in soil.
Lemongrass
This is a must plant ingredient in Asian country as it can be grown at home with minimal effort where you can simply grow it from the root stems in a glass of water, and you will start to see new roots forming within a week. Once you notice the roots has strengthened after 3 weeks then you can move the stalks into a pot or soil.
Curry Leaves
You can easily grow curry leaf tree from seeds, and it will take a year or two to mature but so far you can get the curry leaf plant from the nursery to be planted at home and keep it in sunny area and careful not to over water it.
Garlic
You can regrow garlic easily at home by just using the clove where you can plant the clove with the roof facing downwards and keep it in an area with direct sunlight. Where you can plant a few more new cloves in the same pot too and you can just give them some space from each other.
Celery
You can plant the leftover celery scraps too and just leave about three inches off from the bottom and piece it with sticks to place it in a bowl of water and the sticks are used to prevent the celery’s roots from touching the base of the bowl. You will start to see the regrowth towards the center of the base within one to two weeks, and you can move it to a soil filled pot. Celery requires damp soil to thrive so make sure you need water it twice a day.
