US Mahjong Company gets Flaked For Cultural Appropriation and Apologized
When it comes to Mahjong, we all know that it has been a tradition for all Chinese people where we all enjoyed this game of dogs, bamboos and characters. However, 3 ladies from the United States recently started their own company incorporating fresh design and brights color to replace the ancient game.
However, the Caucasian Trio has then received flak for the culture misappropriating and profiting off the game’s rich history as 3 of them have try out the original mahjong games but then one of them felt the design didn’t reflect the fun therefore they decided to come out with their own set of mahjong. Their new design which consist of new hues and bright colors with a total different art and for each set, it didn’t come cheap also which cost between US$325 (S$428) and US$425 (S$559) each.
With netizen all commenting and bashing over the act of the Mahjong Line, on Wednesday, 6 January the Mahjong Line has issued a statement on their Instagram page apologizing for not paying proper tribute to the games’ heritage.
