Tokyo’s Famous Mario Kart Attraction Comes to the End by Japan’s Supreme Court

Tokyo which is one of the most interesting city to visit with their culture, food and crazy attractions which has draws interest of tourist from all over the world, But some major attraction might face something different. As the famous Mario Kart where you can dress up as these characters and drive the cart around the street of Tokyo to enjoy this spectacular sighting of the Tokyo city.

The MariCar, which the company rebranded as Street Kart was order to pay JPY 50 million in damages after violating the IP rights of Nintendo, the creators of Mario Kart  and since 2017, the main issue of this MariCar’s service as dressed up participants in Mario Kart outfits which ended up Nintendo not happy with it as it might create danger for driving these cart in the public streets and also bad for the company image.

MariCar didn’t accept the initial decision and appealed to the courts in Japan and lose to the appeal which end up the company’s original fine of JPY 10 million was increased to JPY 50 million. Now the company’s final avenue of appeal has been exhausted with the Japan’s Supreme Court upholding the decision. Furthermore, with the Covid-19 pandemic which has seriously affected the tourism in Japan which has affected this mainly tourist dependent business like MariCar or StreetKart.

Due to this, the company has set up a crowdfunding campaign “Save the Street Kart” but the funds didn’t manage coming close to the JPY 2 Million that was targeted which might show that the local also find that the Supreme Court might have some true logic behind this Mario Kart roaming on the public street of Tokyo.
