ICA Manage To Halt Smuggling Baby Leopard Tortoises Hidden Inside Lorry
On 22 Jul, the Immigration and Checkpoint Authority (ICA) has managed to foil up attempts of smuggling 7 baby leopard tortoise which is placed inside a white cardboard box behind a lorry seat. According to the ICA post, the seized tortoise is now under the care of the Wildlife Reserves Singapore. The lorry driver as well as another male subject are now assisting NParks with their investigation.
ICA also shared that the box used a method of concealment that can be used to smuggle other security items. Where leopard tortoise is protected under The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Those found guilty of importing the species without a CITES permit faces a fine of up to $500,000 and/or a jail term not exceeding 2 years under the Endangered Species Act.
