S’porean Agent Leaked US Military Secrets To China, Faces 10 Years Jail
When we talk about country secrets, the first thing that comes to our mind is the James Bond movie or even Kingsman movies. However, a Singapore who were in charge of working for China’s Intelligence official to Hamas confidential US military info and secrete under the guise of recruitment were charged in Washington DC’s federal court to a single charge — acting as an “illegal foreign agent” in the United States, reports Reuters on 25 Jul.
Dickson Yeo Jun Wei, who is under the cover of being a recruiter of sorts where he has screened resume submission from his target where American citizen working for the military government. And he has amassed 400+ resumes which is 90% from US military and government staff. And according to the court, China operatives instructed him to seek confident info of these few topics:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- US-China trade war
- Financial info from US Commerce Department
Yeo was recruited 5 years prior to his arrest were at the time he was a Ph.D. Student in NUS’ Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. On a fateful trip to Beijing, he was recruited by Chinas INtelligence team and stay in contact with them on return trips and received special treatment upon entering China. Yeo faces up to 10 years’ jail for his charges, and his case will be tried on 9 Oct 2020.
