It’s being reported that the Musang King durians can now be bought for up to 50 per cent cheaper than usual in Penang, Malaysia. According to The Star, there is an oversupply of durian in the in the amid of the Covid-19 outbreak where it has seen durian prices drop by 20 to 50 per cent.
In case you didn’t know, the usual price of the durian is normally set at around RM55 (S$18.40) a kilo but now, a kilo of Musang King is only priced between RM24 (S$8) and RM33 (S$11). It’s reported that this price drop is due to the export orders have dropped by 70 per cent since Chinese New Year. This is due to the biggest export is China and China is now in a locked down mode.
Another part of the reason is due to the lack of tourism to Penang. where it has seen a 50 per cent drop in customers. The customers were usually from China, Indonesia, Singapore, and Hong Kong, while some of them were cruise passengers. But due to the Covid-19, most country tourism has slow down.
