Geylang’s Famous Koung’s Wanton Mee Opens First Mall Outlet
Koung’s Wanton Mee is famous for its 56-year-old heritage of Singapore style crispy lard laden plate of eggy mee kia made with handmade pork wantons and charcoal-grilled char siew. This shop was owned now by the 2nd generation, Bernard Koung, 39 who his parents started this eatery business on a pushcart in 1963. Bernard decided to help his folks since he was 21.
Now he decides to modernize his family business by opening a new branch in a mall outlet where it will be based at the Jem Branch while his parents will continue to cook at the original stall. This new outlet with 35 seat outlet is located at Jurong East Mall Jem’s basement and will be opening on August 25.
Prices will be slightly higher at the mall branch, compared to the hawker stall. For instance, a classic plate of Wanton Noodle (Dry/Soup) goes for $4.80 at Jem ($5.80 for an upsized portion), and $4 in Geylang. You can also order an a la carte plate of Roasted Char Siew ($5 for 100g), which the Geylang stall doesn’t serve. There will also be a small selection of beverages like coffee and tea, as well as desserts like red and green bean soup.
