BooksActually Singapore is having their Ulysses In Tiong Bahru. Main Tulis Group (MTG) is Singapore’s only playwright collective focusing on developing English and Malay scripts, with a view to producing more original writing for the stage and many more.

Edwin Thumboo’s Ulysses by the Merlion has motivated generations of Singaporean poets to pen their responses to this poem so much so that it is often joked that the ‘Merlion poem’ is obligatory for every Singaporean poet.
Ulysses in Tiong Bahru seeks to add to the conversation as Matter.Less and the Main Tulis Group’s performative responses discuss identity, history, myth-making and the influence of the “lion of the sea”.
The emphasis is on “main” and “tulis” – writing organically, without restrictions – whilst also being about the craft of “main tulis” or “play writing”. MTG organises sharing sessions for its members to present works-in-progress and receive feedback, and also partners with organisations to create content and programmes related to writing and the written word. Centre 42 is the home of Main Tulis Group.
