Programmer’s Note
The look of WAVES
WAVES was one of the most visually stimulating films that we watched in 2019 and we are still buzzing months after the first viewing. Trey Edward Shults and his long time cinematographer Drew Daniels have crafted a bold, electric and daring cinematic language that is technically impressive without feeling distracting or artificial. The comparisons to Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) and Terence Malick (The Tree Of Life) are certainly earned, altho ugh Malick might not have watched as many Kendrick Lamar videos as Trey has.
The colors are bright, saturated, soft and warm, always at the service of the character’s emotional journey. The camera spins 360 degrees and is in constant movement, tracking the lives of these teenagers and connecting you with their state of mind. The film unusually changes aspect ratio up to 5 times, visually conveying different moods and quite literally locking you into the character’s headspace. We’d love to tell you more, but it would be a spoiler!
Another creative choice was to portray the teenage experience using anamorphic lenses that close in on the subject with a shallow focus and impressionistic flares. Through these shots you are effectively drawn into the emotional highs of drug use and feel the intensity and beauty of young love.
