In 2023, we have an especially ‘early’ first day of CNY — why is that so?
All the first days of Chinese New Year between 2001-2100 are between 21 January to 20 February.
The Chinese New Year follows the lunar calendar, which is based on the monthly cycles of the moon (lunar)’s phases. Each lunation is around 29.5 days, and each month is 29 – 30 days. For every lunar year, we get 354.36707 days — that’s around 11-12 days shorter than that of a solar year (which we now follow with the Gregorian calendar).
To keep the lunar calendar in sync with solar cycles and to compensate for the lost days, there is a leap month every 2 or 3 lunar years. This year, we will be experiencing a leap month of the second lunar month.
The first day of every lunar month is during ‘conjunction’ when the sun and the moon are at the same longitude in China (where the timezone is the same as ours, at GMT+8), this is where we establish that there is a ‘new moon’.
And for the first day of the Chinese New Year, the second new moon after the Winter Solstice, which is the longest night and shortest day of the year — when the tilt of the earth is farthest from the sun.
