Five university students in China have been jailed after caught exploiting a glitch in KFC’s online ordering system where the group was charged with fraud and jailed for taking advantage of a scam that cost KFC more than 200,000 yuan in total ($41,442) loss. The mastermind of the scam is a 23 year old student at a university in Jiangsu by the surname Xu who manage to discover the loophole.<\/p>\n

He realizes that he could get free food by using a coupon on the KFC app and then get a refund using the same coupon on the chain’s WeChat account. Later he even decided to take his scam further by selling the meals and coupons to others to make a profit too.<\/p>\n

Xu also brought four other students into his scam and taught them how to receive the free KFC meals and over the period of six months, he has caused a loss of 58,000 yuan (nearly $12,000) to the Shanghai-based Yum China Holdings Inc, the operator of KFC restaurants in China while his four mates caused economic losses of up to 47,000 yuan ($9,460AUD).<\/p>\n

The Xuhui District People’s Court in Shanghai ruled that Xu will be sentenced to two and a half years for the crimes of fraud and imparting criminal methods and the student was also fined 6,000 yuan ($1,200AUD). While the four students were given prison sentences that ranged from 15 months to two years and were fined in smaller amounts.<\/p>\n
